On Wednesday this week, Connorhan mixed the compost heap whilst new members Kieran and Callum continued to weigh out the competition potatoes. It was also Kieran's birthday - so happy birthday to him!
On Thursday, Danielle cut the sunflower heads so we can dry them in the shed and make fat balls for the birds with the seeds later.
She then started the mammoth task of raking leaves for the leaf mold pile!
We now have a potato plant winner - number 11 had looked for a long time as though it would win at a weight of 1070g but at the last moment, it got overtaken by number 19 weighing in at a whopping 1380g!
Watch this space next week to see who the plant was adopted by, and the result of who guessed the correct plant (and gets drawn out of the hat) to win the £20 voucher.
Very good, indeed, on that plant #19! That's a touch over 3 lb. from one plant. The smaller bags in the supermarkets over here run about that weight. Quite respectable.
ReplyDeleteI see you've got your sunflower heads in, and have plans for the seeds. I find it interesting that there are vast fields of nothing but sunflowers over here that are grown for no other reason but the oil in the seeds. The oil is used in cooking, as is rape seed oil. It is also possible to buy sunflower seeds in bulk, either in the hulls or out, for eating ... they are quite good, and good for you. Like all seeds and nuts, however, they are extremely dense in nutrition, so caution is advisable, so as to avoid getting fat. With a;ll these uses for the seeds, it's a wonder that there are any left from which to grow sunflowers!
Hmmm ... I see Miss Swallow has allowed her camera's meter to read some of the wrong areas in photos #2 & #3 ... Tsk! Tsk! (Just teasing, Miss Swallow!)
Well, I suspect you folk will be shortly battening down for the Winter ... it's odd, isn't it, to have a gardening season cut into two pieces by Summer break ... I'm not sure how I'd manage it. But, as a compensation of sorts, Winter Squashes are beginning to flood our local markets over here, and the selection looks very good. If anything unusual comes into view, I'll send you some seeds.
Cheers ...

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Wanders - it's great to think we have a keen follower "across the pond" in the USA. It would be wonderful to get more squash seeds. We are thinking we might have our own little competition next year to see how many different pumpkins and squashes we can grow. They can be such interesting shapes and tasty colours!
ReplyDeleteOur hedge trees arrived today (5th Nov) so we also need to start planting them out as soon as possible. Also, I hope to get my tutorial class (first years) to plant up an orchard with apple and plum trees in a new spot near the school canteen. I'll post a few photos in future if it comes to fruition.
